If you buy a dvd from amazon.com or somewhere online how is that different than illegaly downloading a movie?

Because you are not buying either directly from the source. At the beginning of movies they always say you can’t sell them and that they are for private home use only. So is it illegal to buy a video, etc. from e-bay or wherever? Thanks for your help.

it says it’s illegal to COPY a video. Purchasing a video is legal because royalties have been paid to the production company who produced that particular video.

Amazon is a store like wal-mart but on line they do not sell copied movies! People on eBay sell movies all the time that are copies I always heard it was illegal but they are getting away with it!

if you BUY it, you are paying the distributor, producers, moviemaker, etc… of course it is different ! they are being paid for their job, so its legal

if you are talking of secondhand, then again, why would it be illegal ? the person selling it to you has first paid for it anyway, and he/she is then re-selling it to you directly instead of going through a secondhand store

its very different from downloading a movie for free, that has been put online by people who hadn’t paid for it either

amazon is just an online merchant. just like how you could buy it from walmart’s website for example

By design, the websites that let you download DVDs make it so you cant copy them to DVD’s. It’s done so that you cant make bootleg copies of the movie and sell them to someone else. There may be ways around it, but its not worth it because they are illegal and will get you in trouble eventually. Remember what happended to Napster before they changed their ways?
