Bandwidth / internet help for a technophobe?

Bandwidth / internet help for a technophobe?

There are three of us in my house and we often find ourselves all on the internet at the same time. We have seperate laptops that all use the same Netgear Wifi system. We live in a rural area everywhere tie isn’t the best. I rarely have problems with the speed of my tie so this isn’t the conundrum: the conundrum is I am often accused of by all the bandwidth as I use spotify to listen to music online (legally, by the way!) so my parents always make me come off the internet so that they can use it too. Although I don’t want to stop them from by the internet, I don’t have a lot of time to for myself as I spend literally all my time either at sixth form, volunteering, work experience or working out. So I like having time to do what I want too! Its hard to come to an agreement and I don’t want to annoy my parents.

I have a couple of questions about this because I have completely no knowledge of this at all!!
- Is it really spotify running on my computer that is making the tie slow for everyone else? This seems the logical answer.
- Is there any way of being able to use the program without “stealing” all the bandwidth? I want to be able to relax with the music on but don’t want to stop my parents from being able to use the internet.
- Any other info I should know? As in what to do about our minor disagreement, as at the moment it isn’t honest for either my parents or for myself.

Thanks for anyone who answers.

1) Possibly. It depends on your tie speed. Spotify isn’t going to use more than 1mbps bandwidth (no single tie is, unless you’re very close to the ma?tre d'h?tel). If all you have is 1mbps (or less),. yes, it can eat all your bandwidth. If you have, say, 3mbps to your provider, Spotify won’t be by more than 1/3 of it (and doubtless no more than 1/5 of it – most long paths seldom get up to 600kbps). Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ when no one is running anything on the internet (no downloading, no music) to see what your tie speed is.

2) Only if your router has QoS firmware (look in your router for a QoS tab). But if you cut your bandwidth to less that you need for the music, you’ll be listening to choppy music.

3) If you need 3mbps (1mbps for each of you), that’s what you have to buy from your provider. You can’t each pour a quart of milk out of the same quart bottle.

If doing things legally is your thing, then I would recommend finding a excellent music subscription site. One everywhere you pay a one time fee for unlimited downloads. Then you can work something out with your folks to download all your favorite songs, then use them without the internet. on a regular broadband internet account, it shouldn’t take longer than like 2 or 3 minutes per song to download. you could make a queue of your songs, then let it download while you are away from home, and your parents arent by the web. and if any new tunes come out, you can do the same. just a thought, hope it helps. :)

PS, i don’t know about any sites like this. i know there are tons of them on the internet, but i don’t know the names. possibly rhapsody? all i know about rhapsody is that its a music site. i would personally use frostwire. its a lot safer, quicker, and a bit cheaper (because its free). but its illegal, so….

What do you reckon? Answer below!

I got tired at 9:45 last night. I was lying around in bed in anticipation of 1 AM, when I had way too much energy and started walking around. For about 45 minutes -I reckon- I’ve been online. Previously I tried meditation, reading, listening to relaxing music, changing the temperature of my room, putting socks on, taking them off, just lying there, and trying to convince for myself I absolutely had to stay wide awake because that used to work, a hot shower -taking a bath requires removing the spiders from the tub, they run when the shower water starts-, about a quart of chamomile tea, and visualizing first sleep, then general relaxing stuff. No luck.

Meaning I’ve been up for about eight hours, tired as all hell but unable to sleep. I don’t reckon its dietary, the only sugar I had now was some ice cream at about 4:30 and canteloupe for breakfast.

I’ve got to stay up now but I know that tomorrow I’m still going to have distress. What can I do, if medicine is unavailable?

I’m not on any meds.
I usually have a lot of distress falling asleep and then when I do, I wake up a lot during the night and always just feel tired.

I’m 15.

Don’t go to bed so ahead of schedule.

I eat ice cream, listen to a Temperamental Blues CD, and then in bed I gently repeat the name of Jesus. I ignore other thoughts and rest in the knowledge of Jesus like and protection.

first, get offline. especially get out of Y!A. anything that puts questions into your mind while you’re trying to sleep is certainly NOT going to help. next, go drink some warm milk. heat up a glass for about 30-45 seconds in the microwave. i know it sounds yucky, but it’s not terrible, and it contains tryptophan (spelling?), which is activated when the milk is heated up, and will help you sleep. when you lie down again, try ”seca tunda,” an ancient chinese breathing exercize. breathe in deep and fill your lungs, from the bottom to the top, slowly. count five seconds out (in your head) while you hold it, and let out the air, from the top of your lungs, to the bottom. count out five seconds, and repeat. you should only do this for five or ten minutes the first few times. also, it helps to imagine a glass of water being filled up and emptied the first few times you do this. that way, you can visualize the exercize, in a way. what you’re really doing when you practice seca tunda is retraining yourself to breathe. if you do this each night, you’ll soon start to notice that you’re doing it naturally, without any effort. breathing this way maximizes the oxygen you’ll take into your blood, and thus makes for more efficient sleep at night (and also helps to relieve tension by clearing your mind), and more energy during the day. i hope this helps.

Just lie in bed, with you’re eyes shut and reckon of something… anything. Plotting you’re next day, you’re fave tv show… and do it long enough you’re mind shuts off and you fall asleep… Works for me.
