I want to pre order a movie through amazon and then download it through a torrent site. The movie comes out in a week. Is that officially authorized under the honest use act or is it illegal because the movie has not been unrestricted to dvd yet?
It would be illegal if I continued to share it through the torrent site because I am supplying this file for others to use, though, if I do not allow the file to be downloaded by others and I only use it only for for myself, would it be illegal because it has not been unrestricted yet?

Yes, absolutely still illegal. Even though the fact that you yourself have paid for it may assuage any guilt you personally feel, in commission torrent software means that you are simultaneously sharing a file back out to the network to people who have not necessarily paid on their own.

So, legally right? No. Ethically right? Less clear, but that wasn’t your question.

It would still be considered illegal. You’re receiving a pirated film. It’s technically a form of receiving stolen property. You’re infringing on copyrights to the maker that you’re going to obtain personal ownership of a film before the movie company gives you permission.

Each movie you obtain is by permission through a proper legitimate seller like Amazon. You’re better of waiting.

Unless the copyright title-holder has authorized distribution via the torrent site, it is illegal to download it from the torrent site. If the copyright title-holder has authorized distribution from via the torrent site, which is EXTREMELY unlikely, it is officially authorized in any case of having pre-ordered the movie. As a side note: When you pre-order, you are naturally not charged in anticipation of the items ships. Therefore you can’t even legitimately claim you have bought the movie. Even if you could, that would not make downloading officially authorized.

Yeah, it would. In my opinion it would not be unethical, since you’d already paid for it, but unfortunately I’m not in charge of such things.
