do you know a good thesis statement for moby-dick?

do you know a good thesis statement for moby-dick?

I have to do a research essay on the book and i need help starting off. It has to deal with something along the lines of the books theme:”the ? whether the universe is directed by God or by some other force.”

Answer by Paul M
You should know that Herman Melville wrote Moby Dick, became a follower of Christ and re-wrote the entire book. The theme would have to be along the lines of ‘those who reject God may compulsively seek other goals in order to find a alternative form of satisfaction.’

These resources will help with a suitable thesis statement:

Answer by hollywoodBactor
He wants to kill the white whale. He is obsessed.

Call me Ishmael.

Melville choose to write because he was a sailor on a whaling ship. At that time whale oil was used for heating and a huge industry—this is before oil out of the ground.

Trivia question: You might know this: STARBUCKS the coffee company was named for one of the characters in the novel who drank coffee. Most people at that time drank tea.

That’s all I can help.

In the end the whale sinks the ship and kills everyone except Ishmael who floats away on the coffin of his friend.

1. He wants revenge against the world, for being born.

2. Jack’s spleen.

3. Moses and Noah. Moses was played by Chalrton Heston and Noah had a huge beard that flapped on his boat. Both are significant figures in the bible.

4. To Andy Dufresne Moby Dick symbolized freedom. To Louis Renault it represented an opportunity to advance his career without much effort. And to Ishmael it represented the chance to tell a story about humanity and it’s over-consumption of resources.

5. Melville’s father was a whaler and lost his leg in an accident while whaling. The industry was significant because whales provided a primary ingredient in perfume which was much needed in the days before deoderant.

6. He got drunk and got married and then was pressganged into service on a scandinavian longboat.

7. Mark Twain, they stayed in the same hotel.

8. Athos, represents the democratic party and it’s left wing idealism. Porthos, represents communism and it’s greed. Aramis, represents British colonialist policies in the east indies. And d’Artagnan is an anarchist who disrespects all laws and causes Ahab to lose his leg to a whale.

9. The Pequod sinks in a storm and only Ahab survives to tell about it. Ishmael is lost at sea and meets a mermaid shortly before expiring.

10. Melville spent his final years telling people to do their own damn homework.
